Question:
Hi Angel,
It seemed like you were saying, early in your talk, that when you and your family moved back into the house that was the site of so much of your past abuse, your repressed memories of the abuse were released. Can you elaborate on that - whether you had any awareness of the abuse prior to that time? I know that repressed memories are very controversial, with the psychiatric community expressing a lot of doubt about them, so I thought it would be great to hear the other side, if that is what you experienced.

Thanks for sharing with us!

Angel's response:

I don’t know what the controversy is about? What is so difficult to believe about wanting or needing to forget something very painful? We all have stuff that we wish that we could forget. Multiply those things x10 and you have a memory that you will probably repress.

And isn’t amnesiac barriers the DID clients’ form of repression? A part knows but the rest do not. When the rest are ready to remember something triggers a memory and voila! I remember.
So, the answer to did we repress memories and did we remember is, Yes.! To both.
